Shakira goes global with her cause

The Associated Press
By Mesfin Fekadu

NEW YORK - Shakira, a longtime activist for Latin America's poor children, plans to make her Colombian children's foundation a global one in the near future.

Shakira said that Barefoot, known as Pies Descalzos in her native Colombia, will start focusing on children worldwide later this year.

"We have a model that works; under less than $2 a day, we can provide a kid with top-quality education and the nutrition that they need to be able to function and be able to learn, because a kid with an empty stomach cannot learn," said the singer, a multiplatinum superstar known for hits like "Hips Don't Lie."

Shakira raises funds for her Pies Descalzos Foundation

Alongside other stars and performers, Shakira appeared on the “Heart for Children” telethon on the German television program “Wetten, Das” to raise funds for her Foundation.

According to German Television channel ZDF, the telethon, which was broadcast on December 15th, raised twelve million Euros to be distributed among organizations that work to help needy children.

At the gala event, Shakira received the “Charity Personality of the Year” Award for her commitment to social causes.
